The need

The games that invented the medium have become hard to play, and their history is mostly told in museums and videos.

The answer

A timeline you travel with a gesture. Each stop, from Tennis for Two in 1958 to the 90s, becomes an original playable reinterpretation, with its historical notes, its challenges and its records.

  1. Thirty-one playable experiences, 56 historical stops
  2. A timeline rendered in Metal, driven by gesture
  3. Game Center records and leaderboards
  4. iPhone as a controller to play on Mac (prototype)

GameTime Machine.

The project in detail

GameTime Machine takes you through the history of video games. The timeline becomes a time instrument: you scroll it with a finger, the waveform responds to the speed of the gesture, and each destination changes the colours, the typography and the mood of the menu.

At each stop, a historical landmark (Tennis for Two, Spacewar!, Pong, Tetris…) and an original playable reinterpretation: Volée Orbitale, Écho-Raquette, Flux 84, Clepsydre, Aurore 87, Apex 95. Reaching the goal completes the era and opens the next one; each mode’s records are kept, and published on Game Center.

The first six experiences are free. A native SwiftUI and Metal app, in development for iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple TV.
