Captives, app screens

The need

Make a screen feel like a pane of glass, with a real room in depth behind the phone, and someone inside.

the need

The answer

The perspective follows the real position of your eyes and the physics follows the phone’s movements. In their concrete room, the inhabitant gets hungry, rests, explores, and comes to look when you knock on the glass.

  1. Eye-tracked perspective, via ARKit
  2. 240 Hz physics tied to the phone’s movements
  3. An inhabitant who eats, rests, explores and reacts
  4. Water, apples and a ball under real gravity

Captives.

The project in detail

Captives puts a room behind the screen. The off-axis perspective starts from between your eyes, tracked by ARKit: move your head and the room reveals its walls as if through a real window.

Someone lives inside. They have a life clock, they get hungry, pick up the apples you drop under the light, explore the walls, come up to the glass when you knock on it, and shield their eyes if you dazzle the room. Tilting the phone rolls the ball, spills the water and drops the apples: the simulation runs at 240 Hz, with the device’s real gravity and inertia.

A native Metal and SwiftUI project, in development for iPhone and Mac.
